How to Make Candles —— The Most Complete Advice for Beginners

While candles add warmth and light to every space, making your home feel cozier, they don't last forever and can be a little pricey. However, you can make them yourself really easily with a few supplies and a little bit of know-how. As a bonus, you can control what goes into them. If you're sensitive to fragrance, leave it out. If you're concerned about keeping the air in your home as clean as possible, use soy wax. Although there are many different types of candles, they all contain three main components: wax, a wick, and a container.

Instructions

    1. Place the Wick

Paste the Wick: If you have a candle tin, you'd better paste the wick to the bottom of the tin to prevent it from floating when the wax is poured in.

Insert the Wick: If you have a silicone mold, you can use needle-like things, such as a toothpick, to drill a small hole in the bottom of the candle mold and insert the wick.

     ■ Hold the Wick: After placing the wick, hold the wick with a candle wick fixator (or two chopsticks can be used to hold the wick) to prevent the wick from tipping over after the hot wax is poured in.

     ■ Support the Mold: Use two equal-height cups to support the mold, preventing the outstretched wicks from touching the table.

    2. Heat the Wax

Melt the wax by placing it in a pot and heating it. Add and stir your color and fragrance, if desired.

     ■ Wax: Wax is mainly divided into soy wax and beeswax.

     ■ Heat Source: Hot plate, electric stove, gas stove, or the simplest one is a large bowl filled with hot water. However, there are two points you must pay attention to :

※Caution※ When heating with hot water, the temperature of water should not be lower than the melting point of wax 60℃.

※Caution※ When heating with a hot plate, an electric stove, or a gas stove, the time can not be too long. You should stop the heating process immediately when the wax smoke rise from the pot, otherwise there will be the possibility of causing wax burning.

     ■ Color: Both Liquid dyes and mica powder dyes can be a good choice, the only difference is what color do you like.

     ■ Clean the Mold: Clean it directly with running water after taking out the candle.

     ■ Clean the Pot: If you want to clean the pot, please repeat the heating process and wipe the wax off with a tissue after it melt.

※Caution※ Be careful not to store candle molds in direct sunlight.

※Caution※ Be careful not to pour liquid wax down the drain, or it will solidify and clog the pipe.
